International Mountain Day 2017 Celebrated in Uttar Pradesh


The activities and deliberations during the celebration focused on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Environment Protection and Livelihood Improvement of the people affected by the Ghaghara River floods. The Gram Pradhans and other representatives of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) of the Khasepur, Tapesepah and Behrampur villages shared their problems on behalf of the villagers, which were listed out to be passed on to the concerned authorities and making required advocacy. The scientists of the Fisheries Entrepreneurship Training Centre also shared the support their Centre can provide to these flood-affected people largely belonging to the fishermen community. The schools in these flood-affected areas are in terribly bad shape and the teachers expressed their problems where NGOs can support them to some extent. Importance of the mountains as well as the interactions and linkages between mountains and plains were also discussed during the occasion. Apart from this, the origin of river Ghaghara in Tibet and then its course through Nepal and then in India was discussed and understood for better flood control and management.

School children took to participate in activities such as quiz competition, drawing & painting, ‘rangoli' making by expressing the local intangible cultural heritage and their thoughts on environmental conservation. They read the IEC material provided to them on DRR, water, sanitation, health and hygiene and environmental protection. Children enjoyed playing the ‘Riskland' game that creates awareness and educates people on dealing with disasters. Ms Pahi Gangwar of Srishti College of Arts, Design and Technology, Bengaluru and Mr Aadarsh Gangwar of Ashoka University, Sonepat facilitated the game.

The event was documented to be made into a short film was presenting it at various platforms and sharing it with all the networks.

Along with a total of 250 participants from 3 villages, five journalists of prominent regional newspapers attended and covered the event. The 2 scientists, Dr. C.P. Singh and Dr. Dinesh Kumar of the Fisheries Entrepreneurship Training Centre of the Narendra Dev Agriculture University, Karnailganj, Gonda; Mr. Achantiya Tripathi and Mr. Mahendra Pratap Singh of TSA, Artist, Designer; and Journalist Ram Babu Pal of the Lucknow Arts College of the Lucknow University; Mr. G.K. Chakravarty of the Framing Point besides Dr. Abdhesh Kumar Gangwar, Regional Director, CEE were the resource persons for various activities conducted during the IMD 2017 celebrations.
