Youth-led Monitoring of SDG 4.7: Youth as Game Changers of Data Revolution for SDGs

Today our world is home to 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24 and more than half of the world population is under the age of 30. With more young people in the world than ever, the provision of relevant education and learning opportunities is key to turning the ‘youth bulge’ into an enormous opportunity for achieving social transformation.
UNESCO MGIEP challenges young people to become game changers in the dialogue and action on sustainable development by tracking progress towards achievement of SDGs, especially Target 4.7, which calls for value-based, holistic and transformative education.  As “the most educated, informed and connected generation in human history” (UNESCO, 2015, p.66), youth today represent a remarkable opportunity to put the world on a more sustainable development path. Digital media are providing youth with new spaces and dynamics and novel avenues for mobilization and collaboration.  UNESCO MGIEP will work with youth to curate and generate data on how young people are taking action to address critical issues covered in the SDGs.
This workshop builds on the conversation UNESCO MGIEP started with youth at the 9th UNESCO Youth Forum (Paris, October 2015) on youth-led monitoring of SDG 4.7 and further develops the concept of a crowdsourcing project on SDG4.7 which has no dependency on the user level of technical proficiency.

Objective:
To develop a draft framework of youth-led monitoring on SDG 4.7 with inputs from young practitioners on citizen generated data, crowdsourcing and youth engagement strategies, building on the outputs of the MGIEP’s capacity building session on the same topic at the 9th UNESCO Youth Forum.  In particular,

  • To explore how to capture learning of youth participating in a crowdsourcing project.
  • To envision how youth can be agents of the “data revolution for SDGs”, curating and generating open data, data for policy design and implementation, and/or data for accountability.

Outcomes:

  • Objectives of youth-led monitoring on SDG 4.7 clarified
  • Draft concept note of youth-led monitoring on SDG 4.7 developed
