Eco-Tourism has been broadly defined as tourism which is ecologically sustainable. The concept of ecological sustainability subsumes the environmental carrying capacity of a given area. The Ministry of Tourism has the specific agenda to promote tourism in the country in a responsible and sustainable manner and as per this mandate promotion of ecotourism assumes larger importance. To encourage the Stakeholders to promote & practice Ecotourism practices, the Ministry of Tourism has included categories of awards “Best Eco friendly Hotel", 'Best Responsible Tourism Project", "Best Eco friendly Practices by Tour Operators" in the National Tourism Awards presented annually to various segments of travel, tourism & hospitality sector.

Ecotourism Society of India
Ecotourism Society of India (ESOI) is a non-profit organization with the sole aim to promote and ensure environmentally responsible and sustainable practices in the tourism industry. The society was formed in 2008 by a group of eminent professionals from the tourism industry, as well as, environmentalists under the advice of the Ministry of Tourism. ESOI works closely with the central and state government bodies responsible for sustainable tourism and a network of like-minded regional / state players across the country to facilitate and support synergy of policies, initiatives and activities at the national and state level.

Madhya Pradesh Ecotourism Development Board
Madhya Pradesh Ecotourism Development Board is an autonomous organization in the forest department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. Its mission is to promote and practice Forest & Wildlife Conservation by Main Streaming Ecotourism in Sustainable Forest Management. The Board, apart from complimenting the Forest Department with the necessary knowledge, skills and policy initiatives, will act as a center of coordination between the Madhya Pradesh Tourism, the Forest Department and other stakeholders, for generating synergies between them.

Guidelines for Ecotourism in and around Protected Areas
Healthy natural ecosystems are critical to the ecological well-being of all living entities, and especially for the economic security of people. Ecotourism has the potential to enhance wilderness protection and wildlife conservation, while providing nature-compatible livelihoods and greater incomes for a large number of people living around natural ecosystems.
Recognizing that India’s wildlife landscapes are diverse, these guidelines are necessarily broad, with specific State Ecotourism Strategies to be developed by the concerned State Governments, and Ecotourism Plans to be developed by the concerned Authorities.

Founded in 1990, TIES has been on the forefront of the development of ecotourism, providing guidelines and standards, training, technical assistance, and educational resources. TIES' global network of ecotourism professionals and travelers is leading the efforts to make tourism a viable tool for conservation, protection of bio-cultural diversity, and sustainable community development.
