The Ministry of Water Resources is responsible for laying down policy guidelines and programmes for the development and regulation of country's water resources. The Ministry has been allocated the Overall planning, policy formulation, coordination and guidance in the water resources sector; Technical guidance, scrutiny, clearance and monitoring of the irrigation, flood control and multi-purpose projects (major/medium); General infrastructural, technical and research support for sect oral development; Providing special Central financial assistance for specific projects and assistance in obtaining external finance from World Bank and other agencies.

National Natural Resource Management System (NNRMS)

The Planning Commission/Government of India, had recognized the need and importance of setting up a National Natural Resource Management System (NNRMS) in early 1980s, towards optimal utilisation of remote sensing along with conventional data - for management and development of natural resources of the country. In order to guide the evolution of the system, a Preparatory Committee (later renamed Planning Committee) of NNRMS (PCNNRMS) chaired by Member (Science), Planning Commission, was constituted in 1982.


Natural Resource Management Division

Natural Resource Management Division of ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research)  is conducting basic and strategic researches to develop technologies for conservation, management and sustainable utilization of the natural resources ensuring food, nutritional and environmental security in the country through 16 research institutes, 10 All India Coordinated Research Projects, 3 network projects and  2 Consortia Research Platforms namely on Water and Conservation Agriculture with a wide network of the Cooperating Centres and State Agricultural Universities. NRM has a mission of developing location specific, cost effective, eco-friendly conservation and management technologies for higher input use efficiency, agricultural productivity & profitability without deteriorating natural resource base.

Natural Resources Data Management System

Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS) - an S&T programme of the Government of India has been launched by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to catalyse the evolution of methodologies and techniques for formulating development strategies. In a scenario of large diversity of data sets, data users and data generating agencies, the Programme aims at developing and demonstrating the use of spatial decision support tools for integrated planning and management of resources at the local level.

International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations, was established as an international financial institution in 1977 as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference. It resolved that an International Fund for Agricultural Development should be established immediately to finance agricultural development projects primarily for food production in the developing countries.
