Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment

The Department of Social Justice & Empowerment is entrusted with the empowerment of the disadvantaged and marginalized sections of the society. The target groups of the Ministry are Scheduled Castes; Other Backward Classes; Senior Citizens, Victims of Substance Abuse; Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes; Beggars; Transgender. The Ministry has been implementing various programmes/schemes for social, educational and economic development of the target groups. As a result there has been considerable improvement in the welfare of these groups.

Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment facilitates empowerment of the persons with disabilities, who as per Census 2011 are 2.68 crore and are 2.21 percent of the total population of the Country. These include persons with Sight issues, Hearing issues, Speech, Movement, Mental Retardation, Mental Illness, Multiple Disability and any other disabilities.

The work of UNFPA is based on the premise that all human beings are entitled to equal rights and protections. It focuses on women and young people because these are groups whose ability to exercise their right to sexual and reproductive health is often compromised.
