The ESD in Formal Education: An international advanced training programme, sponsored by Sida (Swedish international development cooperation agency) aims to provide professionals an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences in ESD processes within formal education. The programme was coordinated by Ramboll Natura AB, Sweden in partnership with Regional Environmental Education Centre, South Africa and CEE, India.
The 2007-2008 Asia programme was attended by 14 institutional teams. Each team comprised of a participant, a co-participant and their supervisor. The group represented government agencies, non-government organizations, curriculum developers, university teachers, trainers, etc. In the year 2007, ITP’s priority countries were India, Maldives and PR China.
During May-June, the participants visited Sweden. This visit gave them an opportunity to meet the people who represent the Major Swedish actors in the field of ESD. The participants spent three weeks in Sweden and sat through a number of sessions on ESD and formal education; visited presentations, excursions and visit to schools practicing ESD. This phase was also an opportunity for the Asian participants to meet their Southern African batch-mates.
The two week Asia component was held in CEE. This phase of face-to-face interaction aimed to help the Asian participants contextualize their project and project products (which are decided during the Phase I of the training programme). Most of these projects, over the years, have focused on developing EE materials, EE project proposals and training modules, critiquing education and ESD policies, etc.
All institutional team implemented an identified change project in their institutions, and shared their learnings from the ESD work. On successful implementation of the change project work, each institutional team was awarded a set of certificates—one each for the participant, the co-participant and the institution.
Capacity Building For ESD
Capacity building for ESD is one of the seven key strategies mentioned in the UNDESD-International Implementation Scheme.
ESD in Sri Lanka
CEE initiated a number of efforts in ESD—disaster education; documentation of best practices in post-tsunami rehabilitation work; adapting educational programmes (in the fields of health, environment, agriculture and disasters) for implementation in Sri Lanka. Being a member of UNEP’s South Asia Youth Environment Network, CEE Sri Lanka organized a two special events for youth—one on the theme of ‘clean air’ and the other on sustainable development.
ESD and Formal Education-Sida ITP: An Alumni follow-up workshop
The alumni follow-up workshop of the ITP was conducted by CEE in partnership with Ramboll Natura AB, supported by Swedish International Development cooperation Agency (Sida), with a view to understand the impact and change that the advance international training programme (ITP) has been able to bring in the ESD sector in formal education system in Asia region.
28 professionals (working in the fields of environmental education, education for sustainable development, institutions for higher education and formal education) from eight Asian countries attended the alumni follow-up workshop. Participants represented their respective institutions like textbook writing boards, NGOs, Ministries of Education, Cabinet Divisions, etc.
The objectives of the alumni follow-up workshop were to create an opportunity for alumni of the Sida ITP in EE and EES to meet in order to:
• Exchange, analyse and enhance processes of change in the field of EE and ESD particularly in the context of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD)
• To clarify opportunities for participants and their institutions to contribute to the UN DESD in local, national and sub-regional contexts.
Networking for ESD
Networking is a key tool in building upon the quantum and variety of ESD efforts around the globe. CEE in partnership with IUCN’s Commission on Education and Communication launched a regional network called SASEANEE (South and Southeast Asia Network for Environmental Education). The Secretariat of SASEANEE has remained actively involved in ESD-related efforts and activities in the region. Main activities of SASEANEE include information servicing, capacity building and material development for ESD.
