Sakinaben, resident of Miyanavas, Vavaniya village, Maliya taluka, Gujarat: Sakinaben, a widow, lived alone in a kaccha (impermanent) house before the earthquake struck Vavaniya village in January 2001. She had a meager income from selling clothes in the village for a living. Through the Tata Relief Committee, UNDP and CEE intervention in the village, she was one of the beneficiaries to get a house. Sakinaben, who can read and write, was motivated by the CEE field team to start a Self Help Group (SHG) of women from Miyanavas, a predominantly poor neighbourhood. She actively participated in trainings on water and sanitation samiti (committee) roles, exposure tours, and interactions within and outside the village. She attends all meetings organized in the village to discuss water related issues, has developed into an articulate leader motivating women from her Vas (neighbourhood) towards sustaining the SHG activities. She has helped form another SHG in her Vas, guiding them through the procedures of registering and other protocols. Sakinaben, as a Water and Sanitation Samiti member, also takes responsibility to bring any issue related to water supply and maintenance to the notice of the Sarpanch.
