Digital Tools and Examples:
- KnightLab’s StoryMap: It is a user-friendly, web-browser mapping tool that allows users to
choose a map and place markers across the map. Each marker can present images, text,
videos, and audio clips. The goal is to tell a story with these markers and guide your
audience through a journey. StoryMaps are distinctive for their ability to combine narrative
slides with each location on the map.
- KnightLab’s Timeline: It is a user-friendly web browser tool that allows users to create
interactive timelines. Each marker on the timeline can present text, images, videos, and
soundbites. The goal is to tell a story with these markers, guiding your audience through a
temporal narrative.
Registration and Participation Requirement:
- Personal Laptop: Bring a personal laptop that supports Google Chrome. Ensure Google
Chrome is installed before the workshop.
- Internet Access: You will need internet access for the online Session 1 on June 1.
- Project Ideas: Prepare your project ideas by exploring the examples of StoryMap and
Timeline provided above. You can choose a topic of your own interest or specific to
work/college project in the broader environment and sustainability domian. Select two
types of ideas: one with strong spatial/mapping context and another with a significant
evolution/timeline context. We will delve into this further during the online Session 1 on
June 1.
- Readiness and Time: Be prepared to gather information for your StoryMap and Timeline
projects.
- Introduction to primary and secondary research, data collection, and templates
for collecting data will be covered during the online Session 1 on June 1.
- Work on finalizing your project idea and collecting information at your own pace
from June 1 to June 20, before the in-person workshop.
- Active participation is required during both the online and in-person workshop
sessions.
- Learn and Apply: Learn the tools, utilize the data you collected, and create your own
unique narratives during the two-day in-person Session 2 on June 21 and 22.
- Complete Your Project: Finish your own StoryMap and Timeline projects to receive a
certificate of completion on the last day of the workshop. You can also compete for best
project and win recognition.

Vaishali Kushwaha
An expert in water resources, urban
sustainability, climate resilience, digital integration, and capacity
building, she is a distinguished scholar and instructor at
Northeastern University's Policy School in Boston. With decades
of professional experience in academia, think tanks, civil society,
and consulting across India, Singapore, and the US, she brings a
wealth of global environmental management, digital tools, and
teaching expertise to the workshop.
