CHAMP
Common Healthcare Waste Appropriate Management Plant (CHAMP):
This project which was started with support from INEP in Karnataka aimed to formulate an appropriate biomedical waste management system with due emphasis on education and awareness towards biomedical waste handling and management among healthcare personnel and general public.
At present CHAMP is covering 99% of bedded healthcare establishments and 1/4th of non bedded healthcare establishments. The fabrication of the trolley to be attached with collection Jeep has been completed to facilitate the extension of CHAMP services to the healthcare establishments not yet catered. Two tricycles have been purchased to start collection form non-bedded healthcare establishments situated in the narrow lanes of Gulbarga, where collection truck or Jeep with trolley could not enter for collection of biomedical waste. Preliminary work has also been initialised to incorporate nearby talukas of Gulbarga district under the services of CHAMP.
INEP has agreed to give CEE, Gulbarga an extension of 5 years to continue with the operation and maintenance of CHAMP CTF. CEE, GFO is in process of signing a tripartite MoU with funding agency and the District Commissioner’s office for continuing operation and maintenance of the common treatment facility till 2012.
The Waste and Resource Management (WaRM) group has proposed to set up a study centre primarily at Gulbarga and also across 5 states in India, for the certificate programme on Health Care Waste Management conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
