NGC-Assam
Since 2002, CEE has been the Resource Agency (RA) in 15 states and two UTs for this countrywide awareness programme initiated and funded by MoEF. The NGC Secretariat is located at CEE South. In each state a local organisation is designated as Nodal Agency (NA). NGC aims at spreading environmental awareness among school children through eco-club activities, and through children in society at large.
Two one-day Teacher Training Workshops (TTWs) were organised in Karbi Anglong district in collaboration with a local NGO, Assam School of Education, the NGC implementing agency for the district. The first workshop, held at Diphu, had 59 teacher participants from three blocks. The local environmental problems of the region were discussed. The CEE-NE team held sessions on the objectives and status of NGC, and the role of teachers in forming eco-clubs in schools. This was followed by a brief discussion on eco-club activities. The programme ended with some EE games and an interactive session of the participants.
The second workshop at Bokajan saw participation by 44 teachers. The CEE NE team broadly described the NGC programme; Eco-Club—What, Why and How; and spoke about eco-club activities. The programme ended with environmental games and feedback from the teachers.
A two-day Eco-club Convention, funded by MoEF, ASTEC and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), was organised by the Society for Environmental Education of North East (SEENE) at Golaghat. The participants were teachers and students from Golaghat and Jorhat districts, who made brief presentations on the eco-club activities of their schools. CEE-NE helped conduct various technical sessions on different NGC-related issues and local environmental issues. It also made presentations on various activities and projects which can be taken up by the eco clubs. The teachers-in-charge of eco-clubs and students interacted with the CEE team and shared their ideas. A number of competitions formed part of the programme.
