National Green Corps
NGC-Manipur
Since 2002, CEE has been the Resource Agency (RA) in 15 states and two UTs for this countrywide awareness programme initiated and funded by MoEF. The NGC Secretariat is located at CEE South. In each state a local organisation is designated as Nodal Agency (NA). NGC aims at spreading environmental awareness among school children through eco-club activities, and through children in society at large.
To assess the status of NGC in the state, a meeting was held with representatives of Manipur Pollution Control Board. The importance of regional review meetings of NAs was discussed. It was agreed to involve experienced local NGOs in the district level committees to strengthen DIMC’s hands in field level implementation.
As a follow-up to this, CEE-NE met the implementing team at Imphal. The NA requested CEE to appropriate local NGOs in keeping with the agreement reached in previous meeting. CEE has accordingly identified five NGOs active in Manipur and sent the list to the State Pollution Control Board.
A day-long program was organised jointly by CEE and Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB), in which 29 eco-club members and teachers-in-charge from various schools of Manipur participated. The guest lecturer, from Department of Life Science, Manipur University, made a presentation on Wetlands: Definition, Significance and Importance.
The Head, Department of Chemistry, Manipur University, spoke on Loktak Lake: Its Role and Significance in the Ecological and Socio-economic Life of Manipur. He also discussed the environmental problems of Manipur like drinking water scarcity and pollution. The CEE NE team conducted the activity Concept Mapping of Wetlands, involving the eco club members, aimed at changing their attitude to and understanding of EE. They also conducted the EE game Resource Off in the context of the endangered species Sanghai and the loss of their habitat Phumdi of Loktak Lake. One of the sessions comprised an Exhibition Competition for the eco-club members.
