Solid Waste Management KIHIM:

A new project called SWM Kihim has been initiated in the Kihim village of Alibag taluka of Dist Raigad, Maharashtra with the funding assistance from Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. Kihim is a small village which lacks proper, scientific system for solid waste management and sanitation. The village also has a huge inflow of tourists during weekends due to its beautiful beach. Tourism has also been responsible for the deterioration of the beautiful environment of the village, which has in fact had a negative impact on tourism. 

The objectives of the project are:-

• Creating awareness on solid waste management and sanitation amongst the local residents.
• Survey of the local households to ascertain the existing system of solid waste management and sanitation. The survey results are also aimed at evolving routing for facilitating door-to-door collection of municipal waste to be undertaken by the Gram Panchayat.
• Survey and database creation of tour and resort operators. 
• Devising the code of conduct for the tour operators, resort operators and the tourists so that all the stakeholders work towards eco-tourism and thus towards sustainable development of the village.
• Facilitating the solid waste management system to be employed by the Gram Panchayat. The residents will be motivated for the segregation of household waste at the source; linkages to be identified with the authorised recyclers for the recycling of the dry waste and facilitating the composting unit to be undertaken by the Gram Panchayat.
• Setting up of the Polybag weaving unit for the sustainable livelihood of the local people.
• Identifying possibilities of extending the programme to the nearby villages.

The activities under the project have already been initiated. Interaction with the Gram Panchayat is ongoing; local advisory committee is constituted which will monitor the implementation and progress of the project. Gram Panchayat Kihim has identified a location wherein the project office along with the Polybag weaving unit is to be set up. The place has been renovated by HCC. Status and location survey of the Kihim village has been undertaken; routing for the door-to-door collection of waste is in the process of being evolved.
