School Sanitation and Hygiene Programme in Assam:
CEE North East, in partnership with Axom Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission (Axom SSA) and UNICEF carried outSSHEPAproject in 7 Quality Education blocks of Assam. CEE worked with 179 schools in these 7 Education blocks to transform those schools into model schools in respect of sanitation and hygiene.
The aim of the programme is to bring about behavioural change of the primary school students for better sanitation and hygiene practices. CEE has adopted a multiplier approach to implement the project. The programme included training of State-level resource team, development of education, information and communication (IEC) materials, training of Block level resource team and finally demonstrations, meetings and mass awareness programmes at school level.
CEE carried out a sample survey of the schools to find the baseline status of sanitation, hygiene and water provisions in the schools and to find out the intervention needs. CEE in partnership with the Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission developed 15 IEC materials including a Hygiene Education tool kit.
CEE organized training cum interaction programmes with Teachers, School Management Committees and Village Education Committee members for proper maintenance of the school campus, toilets, drinking water, and hand washing facilities in school. CEE emphasized on developing a system of regular hygiene drill by teachers and Students’ council. Interactions and regular follow ups, for construction and repairing of Toilets and water facilities, were held.
CEE participated in the morning assemblies and interacted with children for better hygiene practices. School Hygiene Days were celebrated in schools to involve and motivate students for better hygiene practices. Activities of School Hygiene Days included cleanliness drive, hand washing demonstration, dance dramas, folk based songs, nail cutting and student talks on sanitation and hygiene.
