StrEESS-Punjab and UT of Chandigarh
Since 2005, CEE is working with State Departments of Education (SDEs) across India towards Strengthening Environment Education in School System (StrEESS). Under the project, CEE initiated discussions with various State Education Departments. CEE has facilitated the development of proposals by various State Departments of Education focusing on the action plan for various activities such as developing / facilitating implementation of the EE curriculum, orientation of text book writers, development of text books, development of teaching-learning materials, teachers training etc.
Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) with the support from CEE had developed a proposal for strengthening EE component at higher secondary level which was approved by Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for implementation. The project is being implemented by PSEB with the technical support from CEE. A nodal officer for the programme has been designated by State for implementation of the project. A project implementation committee has been formed to guide and review the implementation process of the project. Under the phase one of the project activities, CEE is providing support to PSEB to develop the teacher’s handbook on EE. Two round of handbook writer workshops were organized where content of the handbook was finalized as per the syllabus and teachers need. Presently handbook is being finalized. The handbook is being developed in English which will be later done in Punjabi as well and will reach to all schools of the State.
Punjab has been part of the earlier phase of the project known as Environmental Education in School System (EESS). The EESS project was implemented in the State during 2002-2004 where 100 model schools were selected for project activities. Total 15 textbooks were developed for middle school level where environmental content was infused in textbooks. Educational material was developed for trainers and teachers and capacity building programmes were organized.
This project involved activities such as development of textbooks with infusion of EE content, capacity building of key resource persons, master trainers and teachers. A Trainers Manual for DIETs and Teachers Manual on environment education were developed in Punjabi. State Eco Map was developed in Punjabi and was disseminated to the model 100 schools. For conducting extra curricular activities, four NGOs were selected identified to conduct school activities. The annual events on various environment related themes were organized.
