Sabarmati AshramAbout : The Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Harijan Ashram) built on the banks of river Sabarmati, was home to Mohandas Gandhi from 1917 until 1930 and served as one of the main centres of the Indian freedom struggle. You can get a sense of his life, the history of the movement and those who worked alongside him, at the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, a small museum that includes excellent pictorial and written documentation, a library of Gandhian literature and paintings, and an immense archive of letters written by Gandhiji, every single one on the back of used paper. Jhulta Minara About : Sidi Bashir, a slave of Sultan Ahmed Shah constructed Sidi Bashir Mosque in 1452 AD. There are two minarets in the mosque, each of which is three stories tall with carved balconies. A gentle shaking of either minaret results in the other minaret vibrating after a few seconds, though the connecting passage between them remains free of vibration. The King's Tomb (Badshah no Hajiro) About : The King's Tomb is to the east of the Jama Mosque and is accessed by a connecting doorway. This mausoleum, dating from 1451, houses the tombs of Sultan Ahmed Shah, Ahmed Shah I, his son Muhammed Shah II and grandson Ahmed Shah II. The place’s architecture is in the shape of a square, which has porticos around it and a large central dome. The windows are perforated and the carvings on them are breathtaking. This is where the male members of the royal family were buried. Women are not allowed to enter, and men must wear something to cover their heads before entering. The Queen's Tomb (Rani no Hajiro) About : Rani no Hajiro was built in the 15 century by the great sultan Ahmed Shah. The ‘hajiro’ is a vault for graves and served as the last resting place for queens of this empire. Jama Masjid About : Built in 1423 during the reign of Ahmed Shah I, the founder of Ahmedabad, the city is adorned with the beautiful mosque – the Jama Masjid (the Friday Mosque). The architectural design of the mosque is very unique as it has its entrance from three different directions (gates on the north, east and south sides). In the western direction of the mosque is located the entombments of Sultan Ahmed Shah and his son and grandson, called Badshah no Hajiro (The King's Tomb). The other entombments located in the mosque are of the queen and the wives of the sultans and are called as Rani Ka Hazira (Queen’s Tomb). As you step through the gates, you stand in a refuge of profound serenity, accompanied only by people in quiet prayer, and birds perching on the columns. The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque About : The Siddi Saiyyed Mosque is one of the most popular mosques in the city of Ahmedabad and was constructed by Sidi Saiyyed in 1573. The mosque comprises of ten windows in the semi circular shape depicting a tree with intertwining branches, the carvings look like fine lace filigree work, but are hewn from solid stone, the windows are referred to as 'Jali'. The craftsmanship of the mosque, the carved jaalis in the windows of the western wall are known worldwide and have become a symbol of the city of Ahmedabad. Swaminarayan Temple About : The Swaminarayan Temple is the first temple of the Swaminarayan Sampraday, a Hindu sect. Sarkhej Roza About : Sarkhej Roza comprises one of the most elegant and unique architectural complexes of Ahmedabad. The architectural style of Sarkhej Roza is a precursor to the Mughal period in a true amalgamation of Hindu, Jain and Islamic styles. Grouped around a great stepped tank is the tomb to the saint, Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh (1445), the mosque, the tombs of Mehmud Shah Begada and his queen, and the palace and pavilions. Akshardham, Gandhinagar About : Akshardham is majestic, intricately carved stone structure which stands amid sprawling gardens set in a 23-acre plot at Gandhinagar. It is built in 6000 tonnes of pink sandstone and not a bit of steel has been used. The monument stands on 7 sculpted pillars, 210 single-piece stone beams, 57 window grills, M domes, eight ornate zarokhas, etc. The monument enshrining the seven foot high, gold-leafed Murti (idol) of Lord Swaminarayan is the focal point of the complex. Uttarayan Celebrations
Celebrated on 14th January every year, the festival of Uttarayan witnesses millions of kite enthusiasts pitch themselves at the rooftops to fly kites. On Uttarayan, Gujarat sees people of all ages flying kites from dawn to dusk. Crowded rooftops, fun-loving rivalry to outdo each other in kite flying skills and delicious traditional Gujarati feast are the hallmarks of the day. The fascination and the revelry associated with the kite flying cuts across age groups, class and communities.
You too can join the festivities! The participants too joined the festivities! Centre for Health, Education, Training and Nutrition Awareness (CHETNA) celebrates the festival of Uttarayan each year. This year, on the afternoon of 14th January (Thursday), the participants also joined in the revelry by booking their place at the CHETNA terrace.
